I came back to live in Rye in 2016. I hadn't really lived in the UK since 1991 so it was a bit like being a tourist in my own country. One thing I've noticed is that some money seems to have found its way towards refurbishing some of the promenades in nearby seaside towns - not to their full Victorian glory, but at least they're not quite the grey, slightly sad and dilapidated areas I remember from my youth. In a feat of monumental optimism, enough money was raised to 'do up' Hastings Pier - a victim of arson several years previously. The new pier won architecture awards, but still seems to be failing financially. I would imagine that investment in an iron structure that's mostly immersed in corrosive salt water, subjected to intense temperature changes and extreme weather is more of a philanthropic endeavour than a get rich quick scheme.
Anyway, that's a little off point so here are some snaps of various promenades, beach huts and other things that caught my eye in various seaside towns between Brighton and Hythe. They're mostly taken in summer. I was surprised to find that England actually has summers these days so I made the most of it.
